i am in the "land of the long white cloud." wow, it really stinks here!...at least, in the town where i'm staying tonight. we rented some bikes yesterday and tore around the sulphurous waters of lake rotorua. our bumpy ride took us along the beach, past many a thermal pool and holes in the ground that spewed the most noxious fumes imaginable. "health-giving mineral baths," my ass.
at 4:30 last night i woke up and left the hostel to get some air. it was the clearest, darkest night. and the constellations were ones i'd never seen before, except in those star books i read as a kid. i was suddenly in awe. it was like meeting new friends whom i'd only ever heard about.
