i am starting to think that scuba is not the sport for me.
last night, i went to my second diving class. i was doing exceptionally well, i thought, breathing from the air tank seemed totally natural, in fact. i did all the exercises (like removing the mask and putting it back on underwater, swimming on the surface while switching between the snorkel and the air tank), and it was all pretty easy. i did a circuit up and down the pool. at the bottom of the pool, i was supposed to do the removing-the-mask exercise again. easy-peasy, i thought. so i pulled it off. good. very good.
then i pulled my air source out of my mouth for no apparent reason.
panic! quickly i put it back on, choked agh forgot to blow the water out of it, more water rushed into my lungs gasp coff ack, tried to inhale again, more water, more choking, started to hyperventilate fuck inflated my vest (which one should never do) and made for the surface, gasping and wheezing, and TWO people came to rescue me...finally, i slunk off to the shallow end where, in the crowning humilation of the evening, the lifeguard dubbed it "the thrashing incident." sigh.
i recovered right away and kept on diving, but felt utterly demoralized. the instructor fixed me with a disapproving look and accused me of "trying to hard." and it occurred to me that if i had done what i did in 30m deep water, i'd be dead.
sigh...how much humiliation can a girl take? first the bush and now this!

30ft down in a flodded rock quarry, my instructor isn't satisfied with removal/replacement of my air source and decides to rip it out of my mouth himself. i had just started to fill my lungs again with o2, but was instead greeted with a rush of h2o. i managed to flail around and get the air tube back in my mouth. by then my mask had filled with water too, so i had to endure 5 minute long coughing fit with watre in my eyes and up nose with no where to run!
i made it though-glaring at the bastard for the rest o' the day.
still enjoyed being underwater though. hope your experience doesn't ruin it for you.
