thanks for the birthday comments!

so...it's new year. i get invited to an unwanted gift exchange. my friend cindy pesters me to go with her. i whine, "nooooo, don't make me...nobody wants the crap my boyfriend's mom gave me. and i'm too embarrassed to bring it!!" but she won't listen. "c'mon," she insists, "just bring it! look at my horrible crap! c'mon!"

so we compare. she shows me a polyester blouse, a tina turner cd, and some chocolates.

i show her: a badly made miniature toy bench with a cat and a dog figurine on it, a pair of earrings that look like christmas ornaments, a small plaid lavender-scented pillow in the shape of a terrier, and a hand-painted pin with a cat head on it.

we both stare at my stuff for a moment. then i cram it back into the closet.
