At some point, I gave up on the idea of ever genuinely being happy to facilitate not hurting the feelings of those I love, or at least not hurting them often or in any really bad way, and making them happy more often than sad... and helping them be happy and feel loved when they're sad.

I'm so not sure...

I've always followed one simple rule in regards to this. Follow your heart, it usually knows what is best.
You have to remember that you are number one, regardless of everyone you share your life with. You need to be happy too.
