While they'll definately appeal to the jam-band fanbase, The Realm's huge bass-driven sound is far more exciting than typical stoner schlock. Their songs often start with a catchy pop hook, but quickly give way to complex time-signature and tempo changes that are executed with the precision of Charlie Parker - or, for that matter, the Dillinger Escape Plan. The hairpin turns pivot on Chris Angeletti's drum rhythems, which drip with grace notes and thick, clever fills. But they're far from being heavy-handed - Charles Wareham's smooth keys and vocals see to that. With their catalog of diverse, eclectic songs, they're a challenging but rewarding listen.
