The last two days have been AWESOME!!!!! Los Angeles has so many strange and awesome places that I've never explored.
I've been kind of lonely and depressed for the past couple of weeks, because my job is basically the whole of my social life. I don't go out a lot, and I have few friends. However, the last two days have been a flurry of people and activity.
Yesterday, a juggler acquaintance of mine invited me to see a band called The Peculiar Pretzelmen. It was in this tiny gallery called the Echo Curio, and there were 20-30 people in the audience. These cats rocked. Banjos, and toy guitars, and weird squeeze box instruments... one guy on a bass clarinet... Oh, and the percussionist's set was mostly made up of stuff like trash can lids, tubs, and a washboard. And damn, these guys were high energy, good musicians. Ooh, and the singer had this metal vocalist/Tom Waits guttural barking thing going on. OH AND they were all dressed up in three-piece suits and hats. Yeah, dark-bluegrass-circus music. I bought one of their CDs, but it was nothing, NOTHING compared to how they perform live. Oh man, did I mention that one guy was playing lap steel guitar on a tiny toy guitar? Man...
I'd say that they were the force that lifted me out of my depression. As soon as they started playing, I grinned and looked over at Johnny, and we were both nodding with that "Yeaaaahh!!!!" expression.
After that, Johnny and I went to Nova Express Cosmic Pizza. I... black lights and a statue of Cthulhu, as well as a wall of action figures. You know what, here's a link to some pictures, because I can't adequately describe how awesome this place was.

Today, DJ and I went to The Museum of Jurassic Technology. Check it out, this place was really bizarre and fascinating. This kind of stuff is right up my alley, in terms of the random shit that I'm interested in.

Okay, and right after that, I rushed over to pick up Johnny, and we just made it out to downtown in time to catch The Peculiar Pretzelmen again. Tonight they played at The Bordello, which is an awesome bar that's decorated to look like, well, and old-timey bordello. Red velvet, leopard print, ridiculously elaborate reliefs, really garish everything. We had met the band at the Echo Curio yesterday, and they were nice enough. However, today they were really pleased that we actually came out to see them a second time. I was feeling extravagant today, I suppose, so I bought the whole group a round of drinks (I had water), and we all hung out and chatted for a good hour.
The evening ended with Johnny and me eating at Toi's (Rock and Roll Thai food--cool atmosphere, I'm pretty "blech" on the food though), and me promising Johnny I'd teach him how to play the piano.
I feel good right now.
