A few night ago I was up, alone, working on the computer late at night. I was sitting in the back corner of the livingroom, typing up crappy promotional articles for Article Base. Suddenly, though the corner of my eye, I saw a small black object, a bit smaller than my fist, bolt from behind the couch to behind the refrigerator in the kitchen. And horrified, I realized, "That's either a mouse or a really really big centipede."

About an hour later, it scurried from behind the refrigerator to behind the couch once again. This time I was closer to it, and my poor eyesight didn't get the better of me again -- definitely, it was a mouse. This, I realized, is actually slightly worse than it being a giant centipede, because a giant centipede can be poisoned with things we're stocked up on. We don't usually get mice, so we don't have any rodent poison at hand.

The mouse continued to make many appearances that night, usually going between the refrigerator and the couch, though at one point it decided to explore by the bookshelf. Usually I'd get up and start running at it if it went very far, so it tried to stick to short distances. I began keeping a tin can out to catch it in, just in case I ever caught up to it.

The next night, the mouse appeared again, headed couch to refrigerator. It was earlier in the evening and I tried to draw the attention of other people in the house to it -- "There it is! That mouse!" -- but everyone was too busy watching Dancing With The Stars or whatever.

Then this evening, I was sitting the the kitchen working on the computer, when I suddenly noticed something bolt under the table where I was sitting. It was the mouse. At once it ran under the heater (which is off for the season, otherwise the creature would have baked up nicely and the problem been solved for me.) This was particularly concerning now -- the heater is right near my room, which I am sure the mouse would have a field day ripping apart and shitting all over, since I haven't cleaned in there for months and there are plenty of hiding spots between the piles of Rococo Fashion books and old I Ching hexagrams. I initially sought to put out some peanut M&Ms for it (I have heard they're effective ways to kill rodents -- the chocolate is poisonous to them, but they eat it anyway trying to get at the nut.) Alas, we didn't have any in the house. So, I went and got a flashlight and a Swiffer, intending to drive the mouse out from under the heater. But I couldn't see it down there. It was gone!

Then, some kind of instinct hit me. I looked by my room. There it was -- hiding between a bag of fabric and a bag of giveaway books! As soon as it realized it was spotted it ran out, and, like a dumb bitch in a horror film, seemed to think going up the stairs would be a good way to escape. it made it up the first step, but this slowed it down a lot, giving me time to grab The Tin Can. And so I dropped it over the mouse, and thus it was caught.

Took it to an empty lot near the house and let it out. The house is now free of Plague and Hanta Virus, hurrah!

grayness:
I always let mine out across a nearby creek.

I am glad to hear that you are safe from insidious diseases.
