When was the last time you cried and for what reason?
Today. I was translating some Middle Egyptian using a combination of Die Altaegyptisches Woerterbuch and A Concise Middle Egyptian Grammar, and after the madness of having to translate everything into some kind of caveman English to match how Egyptian sounds and from there into some kind of caveman German to be able to use... I actually found the Woerterbuch -- or at least something based off it -- online for free. The site is called Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae, and is in this mixture of German and English -- but the dictionary can only be searched by definition in German.
Yesterday I was trying to translate something *into* Egyptian. Happens when you spend too much time in the Language section on Yahoo Answers I guess, turn into the slave of these 15 year olds asking OMG HOW DO I WRIET "MICHELLE LUVS BOBBY" IN HIROGIFIKS>? and then proceed to give them the full correct version.
Not as neat as it sounds, actually. Rats are these little balls of false hair and whatever works -- hairspray, glue, thread, polyester stuffing, old stockings -- that one uses to pad out their own 'do. If you've seen my Crude Furie set, where I was aiming... Read More
Vet appointment in half an hour. Cat is reenacting final scene of The Blair Witch Project between the kitchen cabinets.
EDIT: Vet gave the cat a cortisone injection, seems to have helped her a good deal. They say she'll be better in the morning too, which maybe means she won't be staring at the walls and corners anymore. (Cat had a stroke...)
I did not like the new Indiana Jones movie. But, this is the opinon of one who can, these days, stand to watch nothing but Bollywood and televised surgery.
Went out last night (or night before last? Depends how you count -- midnight can make stuff so difficult) with Philip Gunn, who made the film Clown Camp Massacre. He was in town for a screenwriting conference. Went to the Cowgirl, he paid for our entry, which is good, because I don't approve of cover charges.
It's odd for me at Cowgirl because I always... Read More
I am working on a play; a production of David Garrick. Now, the playhouse hasn't actually said yes to it yet -- I really really hope they do. Any tricks to make them say yes?
I have a suspicion it'll require about twice the regular budget for a show there, but I have no objection to running out and raising the extra money myself... Read More
Hmm. You could get commitments only, pledges, rather than hard cash from initial backers & be clear about the contingency, Admittedly, that might make the pre-decision money a little harder to raise, but it builds in safety for all concerned.
If you are determined to mount the production somewhere, then I still don't see the reluctance to bring some people on board early just because it's the small money in plan B. I would think it still counts as more evidence going forward that you are seen as worth backing. Having money or at least commitments in hand can be necessary to qualify for some grants.
This is great. Pulp Fiction in Shakespearean (and pretty good Shakespearean -- better than I could manage.)
J: And know'st thou what the French name cottage pie?
V: Say they not cottage pie, in their own tongue?
J: But nay, their tongues, for speech and taste alike
Are strange to ours, with their own history:
Gaul knoweth not a cottage from a house.

Vicious exchange rate! Why must you be so terrible? All I want is to get some copies of music from "Choice Songs and Ayres for One Voyce to Sing to a Theorbo-Lute or Bass-Viol" and it's going to be about $55 to get poor-quality photocopies or scans from the British Library. And I've not heard back from the Bibliotheque National de France about my other... Read More
Well, this week I have managed to destroy anything pretty in my room.
First I had a very nice old cocktail glass, like a Martini glass but back from the days when all cocktail glasses looked like that. I'd say it was from the 50s at the absolute latest -- looked maybe 20s or 30s in fact. It was nicely shaped and had gold enamel... Read More
I was looking around Youtube and found a clip of the Metro bike chase from my favorite movie, Diva. I'm still learning how to get a video embedded here on SG, let's see if this one works...
I didn't even know there was a dubbed version, and said dubbing is hideous (do they send these people to the Ed Wood school of acting or what?)... Read More
Actually it is more of a light action movie or thriller, but it has comic moments, especially if you have good subtitles that can adequately translate what Gorodish says.
Edit: and here is a nice, very sweet, 1650s cocoa recipe:
1 cup boiling water
1 oz unsweetened chocolate
6 tsp sugar
1 egg yolk
Combine these things in whatever way you see fit -- I'd say boil the water, mix some into the yolk to raise the temprature, then put that into the water and pour it over the melted chocolate and sugar.
On the other hand, the absence could just be a droll wink & knowing nod to complete the burlesque--playing off the manners of the time to complete a taste of the illicit, the playfully naughty dark, enlisting the complicity of the reader in a kind of fan dance finale for chocolate.
What have you been translating? Which stories I mean?
(I just finished off my MA in Egyptology
