So it's back to work after a 4 day weekend. Bleargh.

I work in a job that really is doing my head in. I no longer have the daily anxiety attacks I used to, but I'm still far too stressed for my liking. I basically stumbled into the role (a middle management position in a big telecommunications company) entirely by accident, and it's been less than fun to say the least. I don't mind the money, but it's not what I wanted to do, and I don't really have the experience or interest to do well in the position (although it turns out my boss, who works in Wellington, is fully aware of this and intends to bribe me with more money until he can fill the role I've been seconded into for almost 9 months now.)

Actually, reading over that, I should clarify-I like the job. It's interesting, and I work with fun people. But the company is dysfunctional, and it seems like the only thing that won't get you fired is incompetence. I am forced to deal with people in other parts of the country whose sole purpose in life is to continuously do the exact opposite of what I tell them. Seriously, it's like being a cat shepherd or something.

I'd have moved on before now but for the fact that I really, really am indispensable-none of our processes (which are highly technical) are documented, and most of our reporting applications have no more licenses to provide to new people, ever. I'm also about the only person in our company who has also worked for the competition, which means I know stuff that no amount of market intelligence will ever identify.

So I was pretty stoked to find that our leadership team, in an effort to get our company's average leave balances down before the end of the financial year, has decided to shut the company for all except skeleton staff every second Friday until the end of June, plus another couple of days off per person, no exceptions.

So from now and for the next four weeks, it's short weeks every week. Yay!

My girlfriend, Poppy, will be happy, as it means we will get to watch more crappy movies like the one we watched last night: The Spirit. Despite having Scarlett Johanssen, Eva Mendez and Paz Vega in it, it was still awful. (Surprisingly, Poppy liked it.)

At least it wasn't Grease!
