Just finished reading The Troubles of Janice series by Eric von Gotha. It had some low points, and strangely enough (or not ) I was more concerned about Janice's escape from slavery than the hot sex (the orgies seemed a little repetitive in the last couple of books). The basic story line-Janice a 18th century English denizen is sentenced to life in prison, along with her lover Robin, for aborting a child (they both decided it would be better since they could not afford to have the child, and did not want to raise it in poverty). After awhile she is taken from the prison by a man running a "rehabilitation" program for female inmates, she is grateful to be able to get out of prison, but finds out that she's been dupped, and sold into slavery of the orgy, branding, whipping, prostitution, rape kind.
I enjoyed the first novel, since it let me get acquainted with the story. Von Gotha is a good author/illustrator managing to create an erotic graphic series that although is sometimes horrifying/grotesque, has a heroine you want to follow, and a plot that becomes more interesting than the sex. It is also, somewhat feminist. I laughed out loud when one of the villains, an aristocrat told her something like..."If women were allowed to vote, you might elect lawmakers that are uncorrupt and work for the people, we can't have that happenening!" I nearly cried laughing.
Von Gotha does a really good job combining sex with 1) 18th century Libertine rompings 2) Class struggle 3) Icky subjects like rape, pedophilia, necrophilia and incest 4) Women's sexual and intellectual freedom 5) Polyamorous mixed race marriages (in Venice, no less). And in a graphic novel! An erotic graphic novel. I came for the sex and got so much more. For just pure sex though..The Education of Sophie is the way to go. I didn't really like Twenty, though. The only thing that turned me off was the third book which had the bulk of # 3, but it furthered the plot.
