Saw Sin City at 4:55 today, I was quite proud of finding out where the bus actually stopped (and the schedule), and of saving $10 on cab fare. It was...interesting. One of my caveats with the movie was that it substituted too much gore for action. Seriously...and this is coming from someone who liked Kill Bill. I liked the soundtrack
*Spoiler*, I found it strangely humorous when Elijah Wood kicked Micky Rourkes ass twice. Frodo as a Kung Fu canibal with feline reflexes and razor sharp nails...who likes to study the Bible...hmmmmm.
On acting-Micky Rourke was the best-I actually found myself chuckling at some of his lines, despite the fact that he had blood pouring out of his mouth at the time....or he was torturing people. Nick Stahl was creepily convincing as a pedophile serial killer (shudder), but pre-That Yellow Bastard phase-the makeup he had on after his "treatment" was out of place in the movie, it looked very awkward. The little girl who played 11 year old Nancy was a pretty good actress too.
Bruce Willis was pretty good-considering his lines were verbatim from the script and got really reptitive at points. The only difference was at the end of the movie, where it made a lot of sense-like things had come full circle. What I was most pissed off at was what happened to the character..It sucked that he had to admit to torturing and killing the 100s of little girls that Nick Stahl (Junior) raped and killed so he could get out of prison sooner and rescue Nancy. Benicio del Toro, also good...in a slimy way. Although Elijah Wood didn't utter a word-his performance was better than roughly half the cast. The pscycho eyes had it. Michael Madsen should have loosened up a bit, he got better during his last- 2min scene at the end though. James King was on for a short period of time..so-so. I liked Alex Bledel (Becky) better in this than Gilmore Girls
. Josh Hartnett had a small but important part-it made my skin creepy crawly that he fostered intimacy with the targets on his hit list..even when they were dying. Ironic that he ends the movie. Brittany Murphy hit her worst acting with in the windowsill scene with Clive Owen.
As much as I gripe about directors changing the text of plays, graphic novels, and books..this could have used it. Although I'm still wracking my brain on how that could be done while keeping the spirit of the original text.
Oh..and Michael Clark Duncan looks wierd with the gold monocle in his eye, and Rosario Dawson looks good in a thong, handcuffs, and fishnets. Also, one of her prostitutes was dressed as Zorro-Cool Beans! Sin City... go for the visual effects , interesting non-boring story line, and scandily clad prostitutes defending their turf with AK-47s. I'll now go to sleep wondering if the rumors of Michael Clark Duncan and Ben Affleck showering together are true..and dreaming that they are.
