I'm studying abroad this summer for three reasons:
70% There are no Middle Eastern/African political science courses at my school and I have deemed living without them to be a miserable and suffocating existence, and I planned to study abroad anyway.
20% I told my mother that I would not be coming home during the summer.
10% I like to travel and I wanted to see Amsterdam.
I'm also dreading going to SC for winter break. There is a winter trip to India being conducted by a pretty cool English prof that I've taken a course with, and I thought...why the hell not? I'm going to start looking for scholarships-I'll have almost eight months to save up the money (and the school pays $1300 of it, which leaves me to get around $2500 in job money/scholarships). There are also some new study abroad scholarships at the school this year, two more, I think, and I'm going to apply for those as well.
