This morning I took the test to determine if the county of Cuyahoga will employ me or not. It involved three categories: reading comprehension, typing, and math.
The first two categories I think I did well enough in; the math portion I'm not so sure, and that's what has me worried. See, I was never good at mathematics beyond arithmetic and complex problems always gave me a hard time. How complex are we talking? Here's an example of the math problem I had to decipher...
2(8r - 4r x 3) + 75 = ?r
Might sound pretty easy for someone who is a wiz at advanced mathematics, but like I said I always sucked at it. My strong suit has always been reading and writing. Typing, I did 47 WPM at 98% accuracy. I hope that put me at a level at which I can get a full interview.
EDIT: I just spoke with the lady who administered the test (who has a really thick Spanish accent, which makes it hard for me to understand half of what she's saying) and she told me--I think--that I did well on it overall. I scored high on the reading, of course, and the math apparently I scored well on even though the actual number of correct answers was well below my level of satisfaction. The basic problems, I know I did well on. It's just those advanced algebraic problems I can't fucking stand.
Well, that's about it as far as the update on the job hunt goes. My councilwoman, Dona Brady, really came through for me by talking to some people she knew in Human Resources to move my application to the referral pile (a lot of getting a government job relies as much on who you know as on your skills). That was half the battle right there. The rest is up to me, and I hope for the love of God I get the job, which is an account clerk position. From what the job description tells me, it sounds like a pretty easy job and doesn't require much beyond processing checks and statements, keeping accounts payable updated, etc. I actually did similar tasks as a clerk for McDonald Investments about five years ago, so it shouldn't bee too difficult. And the pay will allow me to start saving money, get back on my feet financially and maybe start going back to school at night to earn my college degree.
Final update for today: later on this evening I attend what is probably the last Democratic Ward Club meeting for the Summer, at which I and the other newly elected or re-elected Precinct Committee Members get special kudos from our illustrious councilwoman. Which reminds me, I have to get a hold of my buddy Rick, because I invited him to attend the meeting.
Until the next update, have a great evening and a pleasant night!
