Hi!
It's 2:30 as I'm writing this... Christmas Day.
Last year, right about this time... I woke up from a six day coma.
Fortunately, no longer does anyone ask me the question I most hate answering, which is something like "So, do you have a new appreciation for life now?"
But just for the record, the easy answer is "No".
Life is meant to be lived, not appreciated objectively (that's my opinion). In either case, I have failed, miserably, to walk the walk. Cheating death is really no big deal. Being a person of substance is the crux of the biscuit.
When you've been where I've been, you come away with an obligation. I owe it to someone, actually I owe it to many someones, to do something. Because I outlived people who were better than me on many different levels. I outlived people who loved life. I'm not sure if I ever did, aside from the five years of my life I spent getting high every damn day, but that shit earned me a criminal record.
What have I got? Taking stock... not much.
There's a Buddhist concept of being aware of being aware.
If nothing else, I've got that.
Your Pal,
AN
