I read that the average American only has two close friends and also that the percentage of people who have no close friends is nearly 25%. I think that's pretty sad, but I'm not surprised. I've been pondering the dynamics of friendships for about the last 20 years. My two closest friends think that's it's natural that a man would eventually find himself without any close friends. Both my Dad and the uncle who stood in as a surrogate dad in my Dad's absence have been telling me virtually the same thing since I was a little kid. Essentially, it's fine for a man to not have any friends.

I don't normally strain myself trying to figure out how women think, but I guess the concept applies for them as well. Another statistic I read was that nearly 19% of people claimed they only had one close friend and that that person was their significant other. I guess that's OK, but really, c'mon... I give it six months.

It's all so depressing. I want to reject this reality. I don't want to wind up like my Dad and uncle. Their only friends are crazy old women. That's totally unacceptable to me. If I'm going to be codependant on a person, they'd better be bringing me some good drugs.

If I'm going to joust at windmills for the rest of my life, I'll call that dragon Mr. Pitiful.
