i'm 29. i spent a good chunk of my teenaged years listening to metallica. in fact, if you'd asked a seventeen-year-old version of me what kind of music i was into, i probably would have said 'metallica.'

in 1991 i waited outside my local record shop to buy Metallica the day it came out. for two weeks, i thought it was good, mostly because it was new. then i started to worry. it wasn't really that good.

we all know about the 90s & metallica: crappy records, silly haircuts, label mouthpieces.

i had moved on. i listen to all kinds of different music now, and i accepted that this band that i had hung my youth on to had also moved on. end of story.

when st. anger was leaked to the internet, i seeked it out and quickly shared it to as many people as possible. just to piss them off. whatever. it's the principle of it.
(i know, i know, a fucked up sense of principle, stealing is still stealing, blah, blah, blah. but i bought ...and justice for all on cassette three times. it broke three times. dontcha think i'm due?)

anyway, whilst fucking my ex-favorite band in the ear, curiosity got the best of me. i listened to st. anger.

i think i'm in the minority here, but i liked it. a lot. it sounded different. i heard things i'd never heard before from metallica: two seperate guitars, with distinctive sounds, a weird (and pretty annoying) snare sound, and the actual sound of the room! it was crazy.

i realize that my enjoyment of this record is probably coloured by nostalgia. i accept it.

i didn't actually buy the record, but my friend who works at a record store gave me a promo copy, complete with the DVD, and now it's in my collection.

i was ready to forgive and forget. to say, once again, that i was a 'metallica fan.'

well, was i ever stupid. fuck'em. no regrets.

Metallica sues Canadian band over use of E, F chords.
