The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences collectively suck. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind may not be better than Million Dollar Baby, which I haven't seen, or The Aviator, which I have, but it is absolutely a thousand times better than Ray. (Which is not to say anything less about Jamie Foxx's performance, just making the point that you can be a brilliant actor in a movie that has plot holes and an unsatisfactory ending).
