Watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind again. Because on the phone with my sister today, I commented offhand that I think the meaning of life is contained in this movie.
And being one of those things that spills out of my mouth before I've really thought about it, that was true.
Plus, I am on a Kate Winslet kick. I'll never see Titanic, but I want to see many more movies with her in them. Because she's lovely and curves in all the right places, has skin that I'd kill to have, and is a great actress to boot. Finding Neverland is very good, and the Golden Globe nominations that came out today reflect Ms. Winslet's chops. (see my comments . here.
My friend Jill is home, and we have a date to see The Aviator on opening night.
I've swung away from politics, though I'm still a woman on a mission, and back toward makeup and movies. There was a lovely quote from Elvis Costello in a Vanity Fair article: "Even in desperate times, to sing of love is the most positive thing one can do." Maybe that's why I want to watch these beautifully heartbreaking films, listen to beautifully heartbreaking music (Lucero, duh) and write about my own beautiful heartbreak.
God, this movie is fucking brilliant. Each time I watch it it gets better, more inspiring. Two other movies do that to me: Blade Runner and Taxi Driver.
Another great quote for you, from the inimitable Tom Waits, in the Proust questionnaire at the end of VF: "Happiness is never perfect."
I think that is the meaning of this movie, and thus the secret of life that I was talking about.

i don't wear as much bright lipstick when i'm dating someone... just gets in the way when kissing. but when i'm single--watch out! i usually wear it all the time. but i do wear some form of lip color every single day. no matter what. i just found myself at the end of my day, tired, without any plans, and no money or energy to make any, to boot. that's what got to me. this school thing has got to be over soon.
