There are, quite literally, hawks circling the skies in my neighborhood. They've been here about a week. I suppose they are stopping here for a little while before they move on. It's unseasonably warm right now. According to the Weather Channel's website, it is 81F on Christmas Eve in Miami.

Regardless, the hawks' presence is all rather ominous. They're great, gliding birds. Majestic. They swoop a few feet over your head. You look up, you look in the distance. You see these dark little dots in the horizon, dozens over your neighbors' houses, a few soaring over your own house. They're quiet birds. It's like they're waiting for someone to die. It's freaking me out. Still, I sit on the warm grass and stare in slackjawed, awestruck wonder. It's a sight, but it's a little too Hitchcockian. I'm waiting for them to divebomb me and eat my brains and break my windows and kill everyone I know. I'm so dramatic. I've seen these hawks before, but never so many. It's... scary. Is the world ending? Probably! We had, what, four hurricanes in one season? Global warming! It's not just a scare tactic!

Merry Christmas! Enjoy the humidity and the birds of prey hovering over your house.

cheech:
Crichton just wrote some propagandist novel (with footnotes!) saying that global warming is propaganda. whatever

It was in the book reviews of the last Sunday issue of either the NY Times or Wash. Post, if you wanna look at it.
One of the things shown from the book was a chart of the last century's temperatures from New York City and Rochester (or was it Albany?). Crichton was arguing that, while large city temperatures have climbed, small city ones haven't.
I don't necessarily see this as comforting, though. I mean, I'd previously seen a documentary show on the fact that Atlanta's incresed size and asphalt coverage had affected weather in the city's region. How we are to be comforted by the knowledge that "Oh, global warming isn't caused by emissions, but, uh, well, increased building will affect temperature" -I DON'T KNOW, seeing as buildings and roads occupy more and more room everywhere on the planet.

Also, the point is moot- we will definitely need non-oil-based transportation in upcoming decades, since oil will run out in (conservative estimate) 80 years or (more realistically) less.... so why anyone would want to shill for oil-based industry (besides the current administration), I don't know.
