R.I.P. Johnny. You were always my favorite Ramone -- a blast to watch when interviewed and always generating awesome stories. My favorite? When you took a sack of stones to Shea Stadium and started throwing stones at the stage while The Beatles played. I hate The Beatles, too. Yoko is my heroine, and The Rolling Stones will always be better than the sap and crap The Beatles played. And just as awesome as The Stones? The Ramones. The Ramones and The Stones, man. That's some fucking awesome rock and roll.
Postscript: I listened to Howard Stern this Friday morning as I am wont to do during my drive to school. And Howard mentioned that Johnny was scheduled to call into the show. The guy who booked the interview said that Johnny wanted it to be his last interview ever and that he wanted to say goodbye to his fans. And then I started crying, because that's sad and scary to know that you're going, and cancer is a horrible thing. But then Howard made me laugh when he said, "Well, Johnny was a Bush supporter, so it's one less vote for Bush. Now if only all of the other Bush supporters would die." It's funny. Sad, though. And Howard plugged the movie End of the Century, which is not scheduled to play in Miami ever. So I'll have to wait for its release on DVD and snatch it up right quick.
Johnny, you supported Bush, you were friends with Vinnie Gallo, who was reportedly at your deathbed, and you still rocked the house with your two minute power chords. Now I'm going to go put on the Loco Live CD, because it's awesome. Or maybe I'll put my Pleasant Dreams record on the turntable because "The KKK Took My Baby Away" is my favorite Ramones song, though that song is also on Loco Live, and I like both versions, and I guess I will flip a coin to decide which on to play. And I clearly recall my mother scolding me for singing that song at age 11. I can hear her shocked voice. There weren't any swears in it or anything, but I could understand her aversion to the song lyrics. Because singing about the KKK is uncool if you're Screwdriver but awesome if you're making fun of the KKK. Like Jewdriver. Or the Ramones. The Ramones get a free pass on pretty much anything. Except for making albums with Phil Specter. Okay, Specter and his "Wall of Sound" -- great stuff in its prime. With the Ramones? Not so hot. No. Though I've heard them play that one slow song live once, and it sounded really great. But I shan't speak ill of the dead.
Rock on in rock and roll Heaven, Johnny, if there is such a thing as an afterlife. Say hi to Joey and Dee Dee for me.
