I was driving home from a date with a girl I knew from high school (her parents were cruel enough to name her Darling), and I was listening to NPR as I am wont to do after sex. There was some asshole hosting a radio show, and he got to the topic of music. He interviewed an owner of an Atlanta independent music store, and he gave him time to discuss two artists and a comedian, music that wouldn't be played on the radio: Joseph Arthur, Hot Hot Heat, and David Cross.

Sidebar: This host is an asshole. He interrupted the poor music guy by singing "Like A Rock" off-tune -- I don't know if it's called that, but it's that song used in the Ford commercials. And then he asked if Hot Hot Heat was from the '80s, and okay, there are a couple of keyboard bits that may sound like Flock of Seagulls, but don't interrupt him and say "Duran Duran! No, really! I was kidding!"

Now, I don't know about you, but most colleges have radio stations. My college radio station has Hot Hot Heat in heavy rotation. And my co-host last semester waxed on and on and on about how great Joseph Arthur is, and he's pretty great. I don't know if WVUM has it or might get it eventually. And David Cross's CD can't really be played on any radio station. It would just be a series of bleeps. The album's called "Shut Up, You Fucking Baby." It is brilliant, though. Go buy it.

And for the 3-5 people who live in South Florida: Are there any good independent record stores left? Ever since Backroom Records closed, I've been at a loss. Is Y & T still around? They were okay. I've been resorting to buying my shit at Virgin Records because there isn't anywhere else I can find the stuff I want, and I can't afford to bother with online shopping because then there's the added expense of shipping and handling, and I really hate using my credit card because I'm really scared of credit card debt, and then I'll end up in debtor's jail or something, and my god, that was a run-on sentence... FROM HELL.

I'm editing this entry to add that everyone should listen to This American Life. I know I make fun of NPR sometimes, but that show is a sure thing. Unlike Fresh Air, which is sometimes interesting, and sometimes really boring depending on the guests. But I must say that I really hate how Terri Gross pronounces some words. Like "fresh," for example.

I wanted to write about This American Life anyway. Thanks, Atom.

I like Dickens. I even liked a Tale of Two Cities. I don't like the radio, as it is used for evil... namely Barry Manilow.

I had this dream once where Neil Diamond gave birth to Barry Manilow. Either way, neither one of them is Leonard Nimoy.
