i have seen 21 of the 488 films released at the theater so far in 2003, and here are my top 5:
5. Amendla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony- Beautiful and powerful story of the evolution of music in south africa and how politics imitates art and vice versa.
4. Kill Bill Volume 1.- pretty much flawless for what it was. funny, over the top, self indulgent, and colorful.
3. A Mighty Wind- the music is just so damn catchy, and another round of wonderful performances. and i just give so many points for the second incarnation of spinal tap, and its totally different direction. versatility!
2. Winged Migration- i was in tears within the first five minutes. a four year journey, following migrating birds around the world along their northerly and southerly routes. i could not believe the film makers were able to capture all that they did. so so good.
1. Matrix Reloaded- what can i say? i was on the edge of my seat with my mouth hanging open for the entire movie. i screamed, laughed, and just went nuts. and talked about it for two hours after seeing it.
honorable mentions to:
Cowboy Bebop
In America
Cremaster 3
American Splendor
movies that i want to see before the year is over that might change my list:
Big Fish
Return of the King
House of Sand and Fog
Worst movies i saw in 2003:
Matrix Revolutions
Identity
there are also a ton of movies that i want to see or meant to see that i just did not get to (dvd rental, here i come):
City of God
Bend it Like Beckham
The Swimming Pool
Pieces of April
Sylvia
Dirty Pretty Things
Whale Rider
Bubba Ho-Tep
overall, not the best year ever for movies. or maybe my tastes are changing, or it just takes more to wow me.
am i missing any gems?
