While I don't consider myself to be a heartless person, I'm getting increasingly pissed off about this news story.
Firstly, there are the circumstances in which she disappeared. The child had been left alone by her parents while they dined and made merry in a local tavern. I can't help thinking that, had this been a working-class family, more would have been made of this - however, as they are 'respectable' middle-class citizens, this fact seems to have been glossed over. Secondly, we come to the mass outpouring of public grief. Is this really necessary? Of course this is down, in part, to the ridiculous amount of coverage given to the child's disappearance by the main news television channels. The tabloids have, of course, got in on the act (well they need to boost those flagging sales somehow) with stories of the Algarve being a 'haven for pervs' and a 'magnet for sun-seeking perverts from Britain and the rest of Europe' (thank you The Sun). There's nothing like a tragedy to get the self-righteous British public's blood boiling!
Meanwhile Zimbabwe starves, Iraq disintegrates and Darfur burns. Go figure.
