On another note I've seen the new Assault On Precinct 13 and also a late showing of Creep, the latest UK horror film offering. Is it me or are film distributors loving horrors atm, or at least scary thrillers.
I might be attacked in the street by mild-mannered people of the public for saying this but I enjoyed the new AoP13 more than the old one. Main reason? Simple, it's not a remake.
The old one lacked plot, interest and to be completely honest acting. I first saw it on a sort of Sunday TV Matinee, it may have been cut, either partially or dramatically for lunchtime viewing but hey, that shouldnt detract from the film's presence. The old one? it had no presence.... a classic? Please.
As for the other viewing of the night (this night having been on Tuesday - it's cheaper ya know) Creep..... God.
I felt sorry for the British Film Council having slapped their branding all over it. Kind of publicity they don't really need. Stewart, my film-watching buddy and general uberific friend was my backup on this one... it sucked. We see a lot of films, maybe we analyse the plots and directing too much but this deserved it.
They failed to hold my attention to the end, in fact they failed to hold my attention halfway through. What? somebody else died? You get to see even more confusing references to an unexplained past? Wake me when it's over.
--CREEP PARTIAL SPOILER--
What was the monster? Don't really know... some kid that had grown up in some kind of abandoned hospital near the underground (subway), what hospital was it? We don't know. Why was he the only survivor? Pass. Why did he seem to feed a huge mob of rats yet not eat himself? Don't know. Was he a cannibal? guess.... that's right... we're not told.
What I can tell you is that he's grey, mouldy and the suit that was used during the special effects was really quite tacky (latex? I don't know... but it creased wonderfully! Realism?.... what realism?). How do I know that? because we started seeing it from halfway through! Whatever happened to tension building from NOT seeing the monster until, BAM! You see it and then the film ends. The gore was ok I guess, when I was interested enough to be looking at the screen. A couple of the characters were interesting but the acting wasn't anything to sing about.
Overall:
AoP13: A sustainable - 7/10
Want excitement, guns, conspiracies, Laurence Fishburne as a gangster and Ethan Hawke as a disillusioned cop? See this.
Creep: A lack-lustered - 4/10
Want to be confused? Fancy watching gratuitous reasons to drip blood around an underground station? See this.
