Blog Homework: Adulthood

So this week's blog home work from @missy & @rambo is "what part of being an adult were you absolutely not prepared for?"

This one is kind of hard for me because I had a tough childhood in which I had to grow-up fast so I was pretty prepared for adulthood, in a sense.

If I were to nail down a part of adulthood that didn't come easy to me, it probably be accepting who I am and what makes me happy. The majority of my adulthood I spent trying to do the "right" thing and be the best, most acceptable form of "normal." Needless to say, I was flippin' miserable living like that.

I wish I had someone I looked up to that encouraged me to do what made me happy and that I'd still have worth regardless of what it was. I wasted way too many years trying to please other people and not myself and I deeply regret that. This is why I always tell my younger siblings, "there's nothing you SHOULD be doing besides not harming others. If you enjoy something, do it regardless of what you think you 'should' be doing."

So much yes to there's nothing I SHOULD be doing, expectations would probably be my answer to the question, I was not prepared to be 31 years old and held to some kind of standard that I should have kids or at least be married by now, NOPE, nearly every one of my friends who went the "you should be doing this" route are fucking miserable.
