I am an out-of-work Information Tech professional, one of probably millions. I graduated in 2001 into what is probably the bleakest job market for this sector in its history. After struggling to find steady work for the past two years and make a career for myself, I have come to conclusion: this just isn't working. So, since the life I attempted to make for myself refuses to come to fruition, I have decided that it is time to make a my own opportunities and go back to school for something different. . .try to start over.

The problem I am having with this is that I'm not sure what I want to do now. Prior to college, my interests clearly lay within the IT sector, which looked promising at the time. Unfortunately, the world never offered up what it promised before. I need help finding a new direction in my life and I would like to know what other people think on the issue of finding direction.

How did you come to decide what it is that you want to do with your life?? How did you find direction??

heh, i may seem together, but i honestly am not any more any anyone else. really. i don't have brilliant advice to give. all i can say is that you can make progress by making baby steps.
i think my drive partly comes from moving around a ton when i was a kid, always adapting to new situations, and counting on myself to stay amused or interested in things. unfortunately that did make me distant with people, and i am not a very good storyteller, because i did not grow up in situations where anyone wanted to hear my stories.

i have found it helpful to imagine what my ideal working situation would be, and then take little steps to make it happen. for example, i would love to work in a place with a team of people, all of whom have different strenghts to contribute to the whole, and who work in a casual environment until we are tired, and then we stop working until we are not tired anymore. that sounds kinda vague, but i have found many aspects of that ideal in a volunteer job i am doing now, and maybe that experience will eventually help me find a job that pays with similar circumstances.

i don't know if any of this is helpful at all, but those are my initial thoughts.
