I highly recommend this film!!! I saw it the day it was released to DVD and was just blown away by it. It's a very moving and compelling story. I plan on buying it to watch over and over as soon as I have the money. The extra features are great as well. Even if you are not a NEW YORK DOLLS fan (I already was) I think any fan of music or music history wil enjoy it. Though I already knew the "ending" before I watched it, the way it was handled was very touching and elegant for lack of a better word. I hope Mr. Greg Whitely has continued success either as a documentarian or a mainstream filmmaker.

Brick is a rarity in really low budget independent film, its exciting and dynamic. To break it down its a film noir set in a southern California high school. Film noir is the most malleable genre out there. You can do comedy, romance, action and now a high school movie all within this shroud of violence, sexy women and drugs.

This is so great that this interview is up today, because he stopped by at my (film) school today and gave an interview for us, since he's on a tour promoting the film. He's one of my favorite directors, and I highly suggest those who don't know his work to check him out.
Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire, Until the End of the World, Faraway, So Close!, The End of Violence, The Million Dollar Hotel...all wonderful films.
Alas, I could take no pictures, since I ended up on the crew that was filming him.
He stayed for about an hour, most of which was spent in conversation with the interviewer. At the end, only 4 questions were squeezed in, one of them mine.
I asked him about his use of music from popular musicians in his films and why he was attracted to those artists and one finds the right music for a film, and he replied about his friendships with musicians and his fascination with rock & roll, and told a delightful little story about how in his early filmmaking days, he'd be up editing film, with no sound, and he'd play along records to the segments, and how he thought that was wonderful.
He's a very witty, intelligent guy. Tall too. He said "Hi" to me as he came in the studio.

V is so close to my heart though... I know I'm going to feel at least a little betrayed that it's going to be all "Matrixed Up."
In the end, I've got to sympathize with Alan Moore on this. I would hate to see something I made (especially if I made something as wonderful as V) have trailers with "FROM THE CREATORS OF THE MATRIX" on them. It would crush me. I relate a lot to Moore, on a lot of things, which is maybe why I enjoy his work so very much.

It's not very "Matrixed Up" at all. And to be honest, most of the changes are for the best. The character of Gordon is completely different, but he's actually sympathetic now. They only made two real changes that I was dissappointed by (one during the Bishop's scene, and the other is that they didn't have enough time to deal with Prothero's dolls, though you do get to see them in the background.)
