I had a horrible maddening experience with UHaul today. I called in to arrange keeping the trailer for a couple extra days, and the woman at regional hq told me that I had to bring it in immediately, check it in, and re-rent it, or they would report the trailer stolen and have the police put out a warrant for my arrest!
I told her that if I was arrested I would spare no effort in suing them. I explained that they told me at the place where I rented it that extra days were $20/each and could be arranged with a phone call. The deal was misrepresented to me at the time I picked up the trailer. The woman said that it was irrelevant heresay, and the corporation has no responsibility for anything their employees say - all that mattered was the contract, and no verbal extensions of the contract were allowed. She claimed she was one of their legal experts or something. I argued with her for a while, and finally got so pissed that I told her to fuck off and hung up.
Then I called the place where I got it, and they had never heard of such a thing. They said people turn them in late all the time... though usually only one day. Then I called the local place here, and they said to just bring it in late and I would be charged an extra 20 per day, no big deal. Finally, I looked at a copy of the contract and there was nothing in there to remotely back up the woman's crazy threat. I wish I hadn't gotten so pissed so I could have gotten her name, position, and manager's name, but I guess it's too late now.
In any case, this isn't the first annoying hassle I have had with U Haul. In fact, I've had minor to serious problems with the equipment, the reservation system, or the branch locations almost every time I have ever used them. Unfortunately, they currently have a monopoly on one-way enclosed trailer rentals. I may just buy my own trailer next time I need one, as I've had it with those fuckheads.
