The meaning behind my tattoos

I've had a few people ask about my tattoos and wonder if they had any sort of meaning to them. This is always a difficult question to answer. Yes they do, but that meaning is sometimes very personal and not always understood by others. I will do my best to explain the meaning behind them for you, some I may not be able to put into words in a way that conveys the way they make me feel, but I'll try :)

The small Celtic dragon on my back symbolizes freedom and independence. Yes it's a tramp stamp, but I will always love it as it was my first tattoo and first display of independence.

The words on my wrist read, "Credendo Vides." which translates into, by believing one see's. This comes from a childhood book that I fell in love with. No this is not a religious tattoo as I'm an atheist. To me it means I can be whatever I want as long as I believe in myself.

The octopus on my arm symbolizes my ability to adapt to my surroundings. Octopuses are strong, mysterious, adaptable, and clever creatures and I absolutely love them. I got the tattoo a year after my divorce to remind myself that you can't always change a situation, but you can adapt to the consequences of your actions and build something positive out of it.

The mermaid on my ankle is there because I've always had a fascination with Siren's or mermaids as some know them as. Ariel was always a favorite of mine. I see myself as a siren in a lot of ways.

The phoenix on my stomach was there to cover-up the scars from my pregnancy and surgery. The phoenix symbolizes re-birth and the story behind why I had that piece done is too long to post. I may explain it later, however that is still a painful story for me to put into words so it may have to remain a mystery for a while longer.

The life hearts, Navi and Skulltula are from several different Zelda series. Those tattoos will eventually become part of a sleeve dedicated to gaming and nerdy things. Mario, Luigi, Samus, Metroid, and Megaman will join them eventually.

The girl holding a heart on my right arm is not finished, but it is a tribute piece to Alice in Wonderland and is my own representation of my zodiac sign. I am an Aquarius and the symbol is a water bearer. Instead of the traditional water bearer holding a vase I decided to use a woman holding a heart, this is to remind me that all the advice I give, all the knowledge I share needs to come from a place of love. The blood coming from the heart will wash over a skull and a white rose. The rose will be painted red with the blood which was taken from Alice in Wonderland. Painting the roses red has always seemed to point to the idea that everyone "paints" over who they are to please others. We never feel like we're enough and therefore disguise ourselves, covering up the natural beauty we hold.

Those are all completely understandable and great stories behind them.

Thank you for this @deviantred it's awesome to hear these meanings.  The small of the back tattoo is always attractive too BTW, I know that term tramp stamp has always been thrown around but I think it was invented by those that were jealous of the people that were daring enough to get ink and intimidated by the fact that it can be SO sexy.  Also, your ink is  beautiful.
