last night was one of the most fun times i've had in a while...

i went out to Madison to see Harvey Danger.

to fully understand my excitement, you have to understand that Harvey Danger is a band i have been listening to for almost a decade. i'm not even sure if i had ever heard the song Flagpole Sitta before i..."aquired"...a copy of Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? from a friend. ok, yes, i stole it from him. but he was douche-cougar, and probably deserved it for being such a hardcore republican at age 14 or something...anyways, that record has been in my Top 10 since i first heard it. and no matter what lame trend i was investing all my records in at the time, that CD has seen constant use for the past 8 years. and, in that time, i have never seen Harvey Danger live. i think that's probably because they were on hiatus or whatever for the past couple years while Sean Nelson was in The Long Winters (who are also quite good).

ok. so. the show.

i went with two girls both named Meg. we met up with my upstairs neighbor, Jason and his girlfriend, Chelesa, Ramrod and Maud. ate some ice cream, and hung out in Der Rathskeller for a while before the show started...

So Many Dynamos opened. and rocked. as usual. i told the Megs and Maud how the Realistic MG-1 that was being used on stage used to be mine, and all about how Aaron is pretty violent with his keyboards and likes to break them. nothing fell from the stand last night though. they played mostly new stuff, which is fine, because Futures is pretty much just as good as When I Explode, from what i've heard...they played It's Gonna Rain, so that was awesome, because i had had it stuck in my head all day long. Meg 2 bought a copy of When I Explode after seeing the rock power.

Harvey Danger came out a while after and Sean had lost his voice the night before. that sucks too, cause they are only three days into their tour with The Dynamos. i hope is vocal chordes can hold out for the rest of the shows. some douche-bag kept yelling for them to play Flagpole Sitta, Sean basically just said no. they played through three-quarters of set before he started to really struggle. at which point he said they were going to play a couple more and then leave, but if we ever wanted to see them again, we should drop him a line before the show and we'd get guestlisted...what a guy! after they played the two more, a band conference took place on stage and it was decided that in lieu of three more songs, they would have some Harvey Danger Karaoke. Chelsea got to sing a song off the new record, some dude sang Terminal Access, this cool girl we met later named Teegan sang Sad Sweetheart of The Rodeo which i was mad stoaked about hearing, and then two dudes from some other country sang Old Hat. everyone did a really great job, especially the two ladies. after that, Sean let the audience sing Flagpole Sitta, ofcourse, but the half dozen people crowded around the mic fucked it up and basically skipped the second verse entirely.

after the show we hung out with mute Sean Nelson while waiting for The Dynamos to go get pizza with us. we got ditched and got some sweet Ian's pizza on our own. we did see the Dynamos boys outside though, and i was surprised to find out not only did they all recognize me but they remembered my name! and also, the Realistic Aaron is using now isn't mine, he broke it already...this is his thrid one. but apparently mine isn't beyond repair and he's going to fix it soon...

then we hung out in Maud's room and ate our pizza. Meg 2 also bought a copy of the Little Round Mirrors EP that has that song that i swear is about the X-Men, and a sweet live version of Radio Silence.

pictures to come, when i get them from Meg and Maud.

PS - Sean Nelson is totally awesome.

Speaking of hanging out with bands you liked back in the day ---

A couple birdies told me that the architects (formerly everyone's favorite ska band, the gadjits) will be playing the cactus club in two weeks. I remember that you weren't particularly pleased with the shift in sound. I know chris still isn't pleased with it. But they really do put on a great live show and they're some of the very best people I know. Listening to brandon rant is one of my favorite past times. You should swing by and introduce yourself. Tell them that you're a friend of mine. They'll be nice.
