I have a 4th Gen iPod with the Monochrome screen. It's about 2 1/2 years old. It crashes everyone once and a while, but ends up working fine in the end, also the battery life on it is horrible. I want a new video one, but don't wanna pay for it. I got a 4 year Warranty on my iPod. When you brought yours in for a new one, did they ask you how it broke? I can only imagine if you told them your dog ate it, then they wouldn't have given you a new one.
