They say it's like a shark. You know, sharks are always swimming. Of course, they are underwater, so it's logical for them to do that. The only time they stop, though, is to die. They say it's like that. Once you stop moving, you don't start again. You're already dead.

Is that what death really is?

If you can still muster the energy to draw breath, if your heart is still pounding the blood through your veins despite your complaints that it keeps you up at night, you're not Officially Dead. My Dearest Louise wrote a song about it. If you're not dead, that means you still have hope, because it's not over - not forever.

That's what death is - when it's over forever.

I don't think it's like a shark at all. It's more like Rip Van Winkle. You can stop. You can sleep. You can play a little nine pin with any strangers you meet. It's not without consequence. While you're gone, the whole world changes around you. Maybe some of what had become so familiar to you will be undone. You may even find that all of your works deteriorate and come to dust, but you won't be dead. You still have years ahead of you to find new games, and if you don't, maybe nobody will notice. Life is funny that way.

So it was that I returned to the Lucky 13.

I don't need to continue the story, I don't need to keep reading, I just want to put my finger between the pages, to hold my place. Some day, I think I'll continue reading again. Maybe I'll finish the story. Maybe I'll find that nothing makes sense, because I had forgotten the story so far. That will only mean that I'll have to start over. That's not so bad. Maybe it will be better, because I'll notice things that I didn't see the first time.

I defy the pace of this city. My tempo is slower, but you can still dance to it.

I'm sorry I had to run tonight! I wanted to stop and say hello but I was meeting my cousin for dinner and I was already ridiculously late. Hello, BTW! smile
