I woke today with thoughts of Spring buzzing in my head to look out the window and see that snow was coming down. In 15 days I will be leaving for my visitation to civilization outside of the cultural pit of Oxford Ohio. The repression of this place has become so think that it hangs in the air and at times blocks vision. I installed a countdown program on my computer called iuTime, a digital version of scratches on a cell wall.
I saw Constantine last night with Jake. Being slightly familiar with Hellblazer comics, I was less than impressed with Kenano Reevess portrayal of the Constantine character, though other elements of the film were fairly good, I think the film may be indiciative of what may happen with other appropriations of DC Vertigo comics, that is they are usually too complex to present in a 2 hour film.
Lately I have made an attempt to be more active on-line, the Disinfo blogs, the Suicide Girls and Barbelith are my primary playgrounds. I have also given a bit more time and thought to my work, my impending thesis and my habitation that extends beyond Oxford. These are all good moves; and I have managed to keep up with my academic work as well, though havent given much thought to conference papers that I will need to start submitting for next year. Next year will be a mix of finishing up work in Oxford and moving towards getting applications to PhD programs out, as well as really formulating a workable plan B. But that is looking well into the coming months.
Hunter S. Thomsons death has continually affected me in ways beyond what I had initially anticipated. I remember the death of Dr. Leary (that in part shows my age), another one of my fallen heros. Today while taking a look at my bookcase, a glance really, I noticed a copy of the Great Shark Hunt that I had thought I had passed on to a friend many months ago. So I was looking at that quite a bit, I am hoping that HSTs journalistic style may inform my documentary style. Gonzo has since become not only a journalistic style (mostly found in editorial pages) but also co-opted in pornography, but only tangentially. It has been used to mean everything from extreme porn, to porn without plot, to perhaps most significantly porn where the cameraman is present often as director, and often only in the audio. Cinema Verte comes close to Gonzo journalism; however I am hoping that a style emerges in my work, and perhaps in my collaborative work right now, that takes into account other facets of Gonzo; that is not only camerawork as provocateur, but camera as guide, and perhaps most importantly of memory. Gonzo cinematography must be reclaimed from pornography.
Yesterday I was introduced by Monique to an entirely new editorial set-up on campus, a wonderful lab. I am sure in time I will get to use it. In less than a month I will be coming back to Oxford with hopefully at least 10 hours of footage to edit down into 30-90mins or so; Ill get to play with my style at that point. Then the summer will be a mass collection of shots, though not much time/space to do any editorial work. I should be able to get more than one piece out of the summer travel, that is, if I can sustain myself.
Ahh, thinking about the future; my mind really isnt on the present right now. This weekend I am moving and cleaning my apartment. Josh wants to move in by Sunday night, I am hoping that will happen, perhaps if I can get some major articles of property to the new apt. tonight that will be more likely to happen.
