This is my first time using the new Apple iWorks for anything. I just got it today, a fall into a little consumer therapy with a depressive return to Oxford. I was in DC for four days of inaugural/counter coverage with a make shift, last minute documentary crew from Miami University. It was the result of me making a comment on going to the inaugrial/counter over some drinks a a bar (I believe it was Lotti Moons) with Dr. Sholle. Anyway the trip down was fine, safe, and long, the trip back the same but with more darkness. I much prefer traveling in West Virginia in the day to the night.
The first night we scouted the Mall area and looked at the beginnings of the massive security build up. We did a bit of taping and had our first encounter with an angree cop. We also ventured to the counter-inaugural convergence center which was parked above a dilapidated car wash. It was quite a little operation they had set up there. We did a few interviews then, I am sure with some of the protesters who got arrested on Thursday. On wednesday we did some coverage of pre-inaugural events. My team (me and Sholle) went to the Boots and Black Tie Ball. The Code Pink Collalition as well as the Ronald Regan Home for the Criminally Insane and the Billionaires for Bush held a rally outside of the entrance to the Marriot where the Ball was being held. This was quite an exciting event, with lots of interaction between very high dollar Bush supporters (more than likely miles away from the 150,000 Ohioans that put him into office) and the protesters in a very direct way. Some of those who attended were in shock with the protest, others offered up the most uncreative suggestions and insults imaginable.
The day of the inaugural was a long day. Josh and I were on camera where we went to cover the Billionaires for Bush and the auctioning of Social Security and the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge. This event was near the FDR memorial, which is WAY out of the way of anything else going on the whole day. The Billionaires put on a very well done skit, it should be performed indoors and filmed and put on-line. Josh and I then walked around the entire Mall and got stuck on the wrong side of the inaugural parade. After some time we made it to the right side, and found that after the parade started there were NO entrances for the general public. We made it to the conner of 14th and Pennsylvania where the primary protest was going on. The entrance had been shut down by the protesters and the police were there in full battle armor. It was action packed. All three of the crews we had at the event joined together at the event. Much excitement ensued and much film was spent. We probability have around 4 hours of footage just from the event.
That night I went to the Billionaires for Bush ReCoronation Ball with the beautiful and scholarly Erin. She was absolutely beautiful, the most stunning woman at the event. I cant say how good it was to see her; we had an amazing time. She was the only person that was able to drag me to First Run at Miami, and we always had a great time here as well.
The trip back was uneventful, save for Josh driving 90+ most of the way through Pennsylvania. All in all it was a good, busy, and eventful trip. It started with me in the final throws of a self imposed depression and came to a double great end with the protest and seeing Erin.
