-the Mars Volta- I had the privilage of being entertained by the band last night in Columbus. Going into the show I was anticipating something quite special, fueled by their first EP, Tremulant, and subsequently followed by an equally brilliant and more extended form of their punk/salsa falavored progressive rock, De-loused in the Comatorium. To add to their very unique music; an amazing stage presence from singer Cedric Bixler Zavala, reminscent of Dennis Lyxzen's (of the Refused and (I)NC) stylish antics with the mic mixed with the energy of an early-nineties Axl Rose, and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has perfected the guitar-hulla-hoop trick and it looks like he invented the move. Not to mention an amazing drummer, Jon Theodore, who not only can play any timing, but plays with perfect, metronome-like precision. The keyboardist, Ikey Owens, has more soul in his pinky than most soul cats today. The bassist, Juan Alderete, although only touring with the Volta (Flea played bass on De-loused) could play a show by himself and poeple would not be dissapointed.
If you haven't heard anything of the Mars Volta, study up. It may be the most important music being made right now. It certainly has more soul than any act in recent memory...
