How many friends have you actually made, versus friendships that your friend initiated?

Where have you found most of your friends?

I'm kinda guessing a lot of us are gonna either say work or, more likely, here. smile

I meet most of my friends through local music, in all honesty. I used to go to at least 2-3 shows a week (if not many more), and strangely (especially when you take into account my phobia of cold calling people) I really don't have any problem just starting up a conversation with people. Well, sort of. I have to be in a venue I'm comfortable in... if I've never been there, I need some time to gauge the hostility level. If people are cool and relaxed, then well, you can't shut me up.
Really, though, when I think about my good buddies now, I either met them through music or I knew them in college.
kengineer:
Three main groups. One friend from high school and the extended network I met through him, a core group of college friends and their spouses, and a third group I met through my friend Mike, who tends to draw interesting people to him. I am afraid I can't really answer your question. We just . . . become friends. Who initiates what is not clear to me.

I'm mending nicely. Have had very little pain, most of the effects have been a lack of ability to breathe out of my nose or smell at all, and a very strange sense of just feeling "off". Wednesday and Thursday I had so much energy I didn't know what to do with myself and spent the day running around as much as possible. Friday I...

I'm thinking of these shows in the next few months:

7.1 Sonic Youth @ Roseland
7.9 Social Distortion/Supersuckers @ Crystal
7.15 Paul Okenfold @ Crystal
7.19 Thievery Corporation @ Roseland
7.20 Pearl Jam @ Schnitzer
7.23 Chris Isaak @ Zoo
7.25 Raconteurs @ Roseland
7.26 Dresden Dolls @ Expo Center
8.11 Red Hot Chili Peppers @ Rose Garden
9.16 Human League @ Aladdin
9.23 Snow Patrol @ Roseland
10.12 Ladytron @ Berbati's

I doubt I will get to them all, but at least a few. (like tonight's Sonic Youth and the Thievery show on the 19th)

Here's to finding what one wants!

Human prozac in kitty sized doses (one quarter the smallest human dose). It isn't officially sanctioned for use in pets, but has apparently had some success, so my vet is comfortable trying it when other options fail.

One of the side effects my mom suffered after her surgeries was a loss of taste, which makes sense when your sense of smell is affected. Hopefully, you'll be back to normal soon.

In the last six or eight years, I've generally found it harder and harder to "put myself out there", as far as the dating thing. I've become more of a recluse and probably a bit more introverted, which I have always been anyway. I dated a bit through the WW personals and met K there when she answered my ad in 1994. Dated a couple of people via online personals in the last 90's, but by then, was less enthusiastic about it. As much as dating coworkers can be a mistake, I haven't had any problems, because the breakups have been mutual, but on friendly terms. The problem with J is the consistent mixed signals and the fact that she's one of the sexiest, most sensual, beautiful, and engaging women I've known. Difficult to move past her when I see her everyday and haven't been able to stay mad at her about how flaky she's been.

Well, I've been stuck at home for a few days, so feeling a bit boring at the moment...

What're you most looking forward to doing this summer?
What's your favorite thing to do when you're stuck in the house all day?

I'm looking forward to some excellent concerts this summer and more BBQs.

When I'm stuck at home I like to read, watch tv and listen to a lot of music. Boring, I know!

Hope your weekend is great!!

estrada:
Probably when a few folks are up in the neighborhood visiting.

Listening to music.

Thanks to you all for the happy thoughts!
I've got a peanut gallery making sure this is an accurate journal. wink
(He says "pssssh!")
Here's a brief recap:
Got in, sat in a room, read a lot, got stuck with a few needles, one of which made me very sleepy. I went in a room for what felt like about 5 minutes, felt a few uncomfortable...

I'm so happy for you!!!

Yay. I've been off in my own stuff and missed the whole thing. I am so glad you came through it OK. I know what you mean about surgery being a relief. It's a plan, a likely solution. Regardless of the trauma, it beats the alternative of no answers and no plan.

Great insight about the definition of a boyfriend. I may have to put that to use some day.

I'm a happy girl. Feeling pretty dang loved, and feeling pretty optimistic that my life's gonna take a major turn for the better starting tomorrow.

For the first time in half my life, I have hope that I'll have a fully functioning schnozz. I kinda feel like this may give me a new lease on life. My coworkers think I'm a bit nuts being so...

That's awesome - with health stuff I almost always prefer a course of action to guesswork. Even if it means something you don't totally want to do.

Let us know how it goes!

It's been an interesting couple of days.

Wednesday, presentation thing for work, which was new and different...always good. Got a letter from a head-hunter, interesting. Got a couple thumb-drives from a customer, more than I was expecting, which was amusing. Friend/sorta-coworker that I haven't seen in years shows up in my cube, to say hi, which was awesome. Got a call from the doc, got...

The reason I like sleeping towards walls is adorable. When I was a little kid I was more afraid of monsters coming through the wall than through my bedroom door, which was broken and always open, and across from my mother's room besides. I slept facing the wall so I could see 'em coming.

Speaking of corners and adorable...

Before school every morning when I was little, I would wake up, and I would immediately run into the corner in the living room. there was a bookshelf right next to the corner, and it couldn't be in the corner because there was a heating vent there. I would sit there and warm up in my footie pajamas while my mom made me microwave french toast stix or eggos, and I would sing the chorus from "The heat is on".

Sorry I've been so out of it since the new site's been up. My energy is still waning from this stupid sinus infection. I'm on round 2 of antibiotics, I had my CT scan on my head today, and I'm in so much (*#(*%ing pain right now it's insane. I've pretty much been laying low, having no energy to be social at all. My grumpiness...

My friend may be coming to stay with me for the next couple days, starting tomorrow. On the one hand, I'm totally looking forward to girly time with her. On the other, it's kind of a reminder that I'm not where I want to be, because she is. She married her best friend since she was 5, she's got 2 beautiful kids, she's got a...

Oh! *squish*

I'm so sorry that your head isn't feeling better, and it sounds like you have a nasty case of the "comparision blues". Lately, they come knocking on my door a lot too. (even though, deep down, I know that it is irrational) We need to go have a drink and expunge those blues, so feel better soon! (please.)

I agree with the Strongmad. I have friends my age that have all that... the house, the kids, the spouse. What it means is they have the mortgage payments, no time to themselves, and well, marriage... I think you know the downsides to that.

Just remember that life just is. You aren't being graded, and there's no score. When you die no one is gonna say "well, they win because they had "X, Y, and Z".

I woke up yesterday to a really aggravating dream, but on the other hand I felt alright for the first time in ages, and continued to feel good until late in the afternoon. Maybe the therapeutic effect of the promise of having brunch with Automatic. wink
After that, went home and read a bit before passing the fuck out for a few hours. Woke up...

Salsa is still very much alive in Portland. A lot of tango dancers do both.

Buenos Ares? Now I'm jealous. Any details to share?
