our family has a tradition of giving "Uncle Hen" gifts... long, long story... but basically... a long time ago, a relative was convinced that she had an Uncle Hen(ry) (she didn't), but her sister played a joke on her and sent her a postcard with squiggly writing on it that said it was from Uncle Hen. From then on, odd-looking postcards would show up every once and a while from various places... and somewhere along the way, it changed into gifts... and now, whenever someone in the "family" (including family friends) celebrates something... they always get an uncle hen gift (which is now always: hand made, obviously loved by whoever made it, and tacky as hell)... I have a seashell figurine taking a shit on a seashell toilet reading the newspaper as a result of Uncle Hen... just to give you an idea.

Regarding your last entry... I hate Krispy Kreme, too. I just don't get it. One opened up right around the corner from me when I lived in NYC, and it was just so totally underwhelming. Especially since there was the Old-fashioned Donuts shop a block away on E 86th & Lex that beat the pants off any donut in the universe.
(And trust me, that ain't easy. You ever try to beat the pants off a donut? Good luck, sister!)

the soup was out of a thai cookbook, and the ingredients included:
Vegetable Stock

Cilantro
Garlic
Lime Juice
Soy Sauce
... i think that's all of the ingredients. kind of a frightening combination, but, oddly enough, it came out quite well balanced. really easy to prepare - basically, you just blend the shit out of it all.

Oh man, I'm having a foodie moment. I found this semi-local (Seattle) place that sells cookie dough in tubs... mind you, not scary vat-cookies designed to be the Tas-tee-est (tm) baked goods chemists could concoct, but with honest-too-goodness ingredients. Flour, sugar, eggs, and so on. Like the stupid ice cream commercial says, I can pronounce all the ingredients.

yup, been to portland... and you're quite right... i never really got a "feel" for seattle until i was over 21 and had a better appreciation for quirky metropolitan tendencies... like indie record stores... which there are practically none in t-town... *sigh*...
