I admit I haven't followed it closely, but I have been watching the coverage of Arizona's new immigration law. On the surface, I think it's a flawed attempt to deal with a problem (Megan McCain sees it in a similar fashion), but not living anywhere near there, I can only imagine what many of the citizens of that state must feel. On both sides of the issue. But, here's what I don't understand, why are many (most) of the people who support it Republicans and Tea Partiers? At it's core, isn't this new law a massive government intrusion into people's lives? I support strong immigration laws, and I don't think current illegal immigrants should simply get a pass and not be held accountable for breaking the law. Having said that, isn't allowing government employees -- in this case law enforcement -- carte blanche to stop, question or temporarily detain a person a step toward a government takeover? Or, dare I say it, a step toward socialism?

I'm really not trying to be facetious. I'm just curious how that gibes.
