No secret that I've been an Obama supporter, but I have to ask, why go to Denmark in a bid to land the Olympics? I mean, I hope Chicago gets it, but at the same time is it necessary to send the President? Isn't the First Lady and Oprah enough? One thing my gf and I have talked about a lot over the past 2 years is that while we like Obama and his team (campaign, Administration), they seem to over-think or under-think a lot of things. Some things that should be easy end up being hard, and some things that are hard seem to be dismissed too easily. We're not even 10 months into his presidency, so a lot of it has to do with feeling out the terrain so the missteps can be forgiven. But, this is one of those weird occurrences where I think the situation was over-analyzed. I'm not losing sleep over it (other than I'm writing this at 5:39am, ha ha), but I kind of wish he hadn't gone. Granted, other world leaders have done the same thing, and if he hadn't gone people would have blasted him for not sticking up for his city. So, I guess if Chicago gets the Games it will have all been worth it. We'll see. whatever

Update: Well, so much for that. Chicago was ousted in the first round. Ouch. While I wasn't expecting that outcome, I kept thinking in the back of my mind that another city would win... and now we'll have the stories with gleeful Republicans enjoying the decision, the blame for which will be placed squarely at Obama's feet. Ugh. skull

He was screwed either way. If he didn't go they would have blamed him for the bid loss; while other presidents came and in their own charismatic way, gave heartfelt speeches for their country. Really, it had very little to do with Obama. Chicago's loss has everything to do with a city divided. Any poll you took would come down to just about 50/50 for or against the games coming.

I personally did not want to deal with that here. We can't quite get all our citizens to work on time as is, let alone with the world descending upon the city. Prices would skyrocket, and we already have an incredibly high sales tax rate. Viva Rio! wink
