I have found that I have a hard time in reading comic plays from a director's standpoint. I know it's a comedy, but I find myself drawn perpetually to the underlying drama that good comedy requires. As such, I can read scenes from "Crazy and a Half" and find them unbelievably sad. of course, if I see someone else's direction of it, I can then see the obvious comedy implied in the lines, but I can't create it in my head unless it's very obvious.
And you may say, "Well, fine. So what?"
I am choosing scenes for this huge retrospective review I'm directing, and I'm aiming comic in all cases (though I could end up with one not). Trouble is, I'm terrified of some of them. You can probably read my distress in my face as I look through some of these scripts. I can tell this motion is supposed to be comic, but what the hell is it? This page can't be THAT heavy, that's just how I'm reading it, right?
Ugh.
I plan to ask for lots of help, which is available, but that doesn't mean I ain't terrified.
Man, I have so much work to do to before auditions in three weeks. You may well see less of me while I put this thing together. Or, maybe not!

reading comedy is often much sadder than watching a comedy performance, you're right, at least in my experience. i can imagine the same from a transcript of a stand-up comic's jokes, probably.
