Last Tuesday, are article in the Science portion of the New York Times suggested that women's sexuality may not be based AT ALL on orientation, and instead is based solely on preference. This was suggested by tests in which subjects were shown images of women and men and their arousal was measured. Gay men were aroused by pictures of men, straight men were aroused by images of women, and women were fairly indiscriminate regardless of their stated sexual orientation. This does leave out male bisexuals, I realized, but regardless, did have interesting implications.
Interesting yes. I'm not so sure it's a completely accurate picture.
Our society is far more permissive in its notions of female sexuality (certainly not completely so, not by any stretch) than male sexuality. Perhaps in a society (such as that of the Ancient Greeks) where male homosexual relations are accepted and even encouraged, these findings would be different. In the case of the Greeks, I'm sure there would be more men who, when viewing salacious images or both women and men, had sexual responses to both.
It is worth considering.
