this morning (it's the 11th. i should be doing uni work) I watched a short film from 1984 by some guy from the film school at my uni. It's called ABATTOIRS. goes for 11 minutes and shows a) guts and gore and b) how dehumanised the slaughterhouse workers are.
Everyone should read Fast Food Nation. Eric Schlosser did some amazing case studies on abattoirs in the U.S.
After i read it i looked up stuff about abattoirs over here and the same shit happens (wow i guess). Found some articles about cows getting to the slaughterhouse with cancer etc. "production" is so high that the "farmers" don't have time to "care for each animal", hence they pick out the sick ones before slaughter rather than ensure the cows don't get to the slaughterhouse in that state.
Though that specific article i think was actually to do with an RSPCA inspection. So I guess chances are if there wasn't an RSPCA inspector there the cow with eye cancer could have been shoved onto the conveyer belt of death.

Plus one of the large abattoirs over here in albany employed ~50-100 afghan refugees; as they were so desperate for work they were "willing" to do halaal ritual slaughtering which nobody else would do. so basically they were able to produce halaal meat from these desperate refugees... then ruddock our genius foreign minister at the time told them to fuck off home! the abattoir ended up losing lots of money because smaller consumer base or whatever the fuck; no halaal meat means smaller target market; so because there was less aussie profit i think the abattoir complained. but still no home for you dirty refugee! this is white australia!

One of my personal favourites is the fact that the U.S. just recently "had" to change it's laws about "DOWNED" cows because of the mad cow disease scare. Until late last year/early this year it was all fine and dandy for a cow that was too sick to GET UP AND WALK for the cow to be dragged into the slaughterhouse and killed for consumption. CONSUMPTION.
They've changed this now because obviously eating SICK CREATURES is a FUCKING STUPID IDEA. If people had realised this happened I like to think that perhaps people would have complained about it.
Anyway, hopefully the changes to the slaughter laws will push "farmers" to actually produce happy cattle before they get horribly slaughtered. Ger.
