I'm trying to complete this "education unit" from work[I am a nursrs' aide ina nursing home] about how to talk to the families of people who are dying/how to talk to the terminally ill. I'm so wishing this was multiple choice like all the other education units.
sample question:
1. Ida Jones has widespread cancer and has been placed on hospice care. She has stopped eating, is very weak, and requires high doses of pain medication. During the last few days that you've cared for her she has been very quiet. While you are providing evening care, Ida holds your hand and asks, "Am I dying? What will happen to me?"
How should you respond to Ida?

there are five other questions and they are all about talking to the families-- explaining what's going on, etc.
Honestly, the nurses do more of the talking to families than we aides do. Unless I know the family members very well. THey are the ones who get to say:
"IT's a good time to say goodbye"
and most of our clients/residents/patients know they are dying before we do.
anyway. I think I'm going to go back and get the unit on ostomy care instead of this one... the blank lines are killing me.

however, on a lighter note, someone on that side of his family has been telling people that he and I are secretly engaged. This is probably the result of the telephone game effect, and not someone being mean or pushy--- but all his relatives, however distant, over there have been asking him when the big day is.
heeheeheehee. It's usually my family giving me crap about it.
anyway. so he gets to say repeatedly that, no we are not engaged, and yes, eventually we will be, it's really a forgone conclusion at this point, but precisely because of that, we are in no rush to leap into the married state.
hehehehehe.
