I was looking through a book of quotes I have today, and I was disheartened to find something. I'd recently had a conversation with a close friend of mine about Honor. I was wondering what quotes I might find on the subject, so i decided to look it up.

Honor See Reputation; Virtue

I was, and to some extent still am astonished. The idea that the concept of Honor is viewed as having something to do with reputation is almost unbelievable for me. I decided to take a look at some of the quotes they had selected.

Unfortunately there were no qoutations that spoke directly of Honor in the "Reputation" section, so I can only assume they felt that all applied.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.
-Bible

Reputation, like a face, is the symbol of its possessor and creator, and another can use it only as a mask.
- Learned Hand

So I then decided to look up the "virtue" section, hoping that perhaps there would be something more. There was not much, but I did find one quote.

My honor is my life.
- Shakespeare

But these are not the true meaning of honor. These do not encompass what it is. I had to look elsewhere to find what it means for me. You see honor is something that is known only to he who has it, it is an inward measure. To speak of it as any outward aspect is to distort it, as it is something that only you can see.

That does not mean that there have not been men who spoke of honor as it is.

Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlive the bastards.
- Lois McMaster Bujold

Honor does not have to be defended.
- Robert J Sawyer

For me, these ideas are not complete. However, as I said before, Honor is an inward measure. So how can we possibly learn of it's meaning by listening to anyone but ourselves.
