I got home january 1st at 1 pm, laying down on my bed, with the feeling that the party could have ended hours before. Picked up the phone, it's my sister telling me that my grandma had died a few hours before.... the next 48 hours is me, sleepless, driving to the country side, standing by the coffin, saying "thanks" to relatives I dont even recognize, finally staring at the empty house.
The house is huge, antique, and my family has lived and died in it for over 400 years.
And now that my grandma has died it's empty for the first time since 1500.
This gives me a strange feeling about the durability of things.
Seeing the last person of a generation die the first day of the year, knowing that those walls will mold and rot, it's kind of the knowledge that the party is over.
