It was quiet at the start of the day. Nurses woke Kate at 8 for her meds otherwise she might have slept much longer. (She is battling a cold.) Therapy sessions were scheduled at 11 and 11:30. Physical therapy was first and was exhausting: Kate was on the mat, being tilted to both sides and then asked to upright herself. In speech therapy, she easily and quickly ate yogurt, convincing the therapist to schedule a WHOLE meal for her lunch tomorrow.

The afternoon was much too quiet. Kate and I shared some U.S. Open tennis and some music. I gave her a short backrub and exercised her legs in the absence of any range of motion exercises on the weekend.

At 5, nephew Ben came with Snowball. I had visions all day of this visit being the event that would spark Kate all the way out of her coma: that she would recognize the cat, remember everything and start talking non-stop.

It didn't quite work out that way. Kate did pet the cat quite a bit, but that was about all.

But then Dave called to say he was "more pleased" with her conversation tonight than any other evening so far. He said Kate was consistently communicating with him for 20 minutes, either speaking words, making sounds, or shaking her head yes and no...and appropriately.

So maybe the cat DID spark something.

Please go here and read this article about Katie. The North Wind is the NMU paper that Katie wrote for and was an editor of. She was always very proud of her work for The North Wind. Many a Thursday She'd call me up early in the morning after the paper was finished and she was on her way to deliver it to the printers. It was almost tradition that I'd get a call from her around 4 am and we'd talk for a while because as tired as she was, she wouldn't want to go to sleep right away. Also, putting the paper together was a lot of work and often very stressful so she'd talk about that. I miss all of our conversations equally, but I really miss those, since we hadn't had one since the beginning of summer when the paper went into Summer hietus.

I'll have an interesting and, wordy, update tomorrow. Nothing terribly introspective, just some words from a comic book I read today that really made me think and feel.
