Kate is NOT in a coma any longer. Melissa is correct: Kate's eyes are open and they often focus on objects, she responds to some commands and attempts to talk. Technically that means she is not in a coma.
Kate's physical therapy was tough this morning. One therapist sat on beach ball behind Kate, supporting her back and holding her head while she sat on the edge of a 18" high mat. A second therapist sat in front of her asking her to do different tasks. They said she moved her head well and was even able to hold it in one position fairly long. (not upright) They also leaned her to one side to have her support her weight on one arm. She did well.
After the tiring session, nurse Sharon plugged Kate's trach. She did well for several hours, but around 3 she hyperventilated and when her oxygenation rate dropped to 88, they unplugged the trach and put her back on moistened oxygen. Apparently this is common. She wouldn't have been plugged during the night anyway, so tomorrow they will plug it again and see how long she tolerates it.
The neuro said the shaking is definitely NOT seizures.
Mom Angie
This is amazing news! I really can't wait to see her this weekend. I called her mom yesterday and she put the phone up to Katie's ear and let me talk to her for a bit for the first time in over a month. I really miss that girl.
