Tonight I watched this movie for this first time in almost 15 years, and cried like a baby.
Far, far too familiar. That's not to give the impression that the neighborhood I live in is anything like South Central LA. However, Lawrence Fishburn's charachter reminds me so much of how I remember my father. It made me miss him more then I usually do.
I also see aspects of myself in each of the three main charachters:
Like Tre, I feel frustrated and in need of both a strong father and a supportive partner.
Like Ricky, I fell like I'll never achieve my dreams because there is too much against me. And, yes, I've also given serious thought to joining the Army.
Like Doughboy, I feel misunderstood. This feeling leads me to lash out in anger and, yes, even violence. I also feel like my mother blames me for all of my brother's problems.
It took a 14-year old movie to get me to admit to things in here I never did before.
