Exorcist III
(not the official one, but this is an excellent fan-made trailer)

Exorcist III. To the uninitiated the title alone invites derision, but to those in the know, this is on damn fine horror film. And similar to The Devil's Rejects, I find it superior to the original. Based on a novel by original Exorcist writer, William Peter Blatty, Exorcist III is more than an average fright fest. Excellent acting from a cast anchored by vet George C. Scott and questions about the existence of God and goodness in a world so tainted by hatred and evil take center stage over your standard horror movie fare. But that's not to say that there aren't some genuinely frightening moments. Anyone who's seen the movie will recognize this shot:

as the culmination of a nail-bitingly tense scene, one that has stayed with me my entire life. Easily one of the most frightening scenes and powerful images I've ever seen.
Similar to Stir of Echoes and tomorrow's film, this is an example of how to direct a near flawless horror film. The pacing, cinematography and editing are all top notch. Yes some of the cameos can be distracting, (Patrick Ewing and Fabio appear as angels) and the studio mandated ending is over the top and untrue to the spirit of the source material, but none of that can taint the rest of this intense and intelligent experience.
