The warmth of her breath on the back of his neck relaxed him. It convinced him that everything was as it should be. They were together, and that was all that mattered. He rolled over in the bed to face her. He gently brushed stray strands of her brunette hair from in front of her eyes.
I love you, he said, smiling with his mouth and in his heart as he said it.
She smiled back, I love you too.
He kissed her and he felt his heart swell. Her soft lips pressed against his, the two of them breathing as one, gave him a feeling of comfort and contentment. He wanted it to last forever.
The alarm blared and the clock display read 5:55 am. She was gone, and he was alone. Like always.
